UFC returns to network television for the third time on Saturday with four bouts on Fox and six on Fuel TV. What questions will be answered when the fights are over?
1. Is Johny Hendricks ready for the big time? Since losing to Rick Story in 2010, Hendricks has been on a tear. He won three straight fights, including a 12-second knockout of Jon Fitch. His last test before being promised a title shot is Josh Koscheck, a one-time welterweight contender who has equally impressive wrestling credentials.
2. Does Nate Diaz deserve a title shot? UFC president Dana White says with a win over Jim Miller, yes. Diaz won his last two fights, but lost the two before that. The lightweight belt is being contested in August and Anthony Pettis is waiting in the wings. Even with a win, Diaz may have some time on his hands before fighting for UFC gold.
3. Is Josh Koscheck over the hill? Koscheck is 34. Hendricks is 28. That age difference means it’s easy to look at the fight as old fogie vs. young buck, but Koscheck took offense, calling any media who pointed out the gap between their ages “retards.” If he wants to prove he’s not an old man, he needs to give a better showing in the cage against Hendricks than he did against Mike Pierce in February, when he barely won a split decision.
4. Will Pat Barry vs. Lavar Johnson last more than a minute? This bout kicks off the month of the heavyweight, and it promises to be the perfect way to start a May that will feature the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix finals and UFC 146′s all heavyweight main card. Barry and Johnson have 20 knockout wins between them. Chances are that number will be 21 by the time the bout is over.
5. How do the latest crop of “The Ultimate Fighter” products stand up? The preliminary card, airing on Fuel TV and Fox Deportes, is full of TUF castmembers from the past few seasons. John Dodson, Louis Gaudinot and Dennis Bermudez are getting their first shots at fights outside of the TUF finale, and this is their chance to show they’re more than just good TV.

UFC president Dana White loves busting on his fighters, so he had some fun when he caught “The Ultimate Fighter” coach and bantamweight contender Urijah Faber flexing without a shirt in a two-way mirror at the TUF gym. As always, White drops some f-bombs here and there, so beware if your workplace frowns on such a thing.
Faber tweeted that White was so tickled by the blog that, “Wow @danawhite just called me laughing hysterically abt to pee his pants.” Let this be a lesson to anyone about to flex in a mirror. Dana White may just be on the other side with a video camera.

Let’s hear it for the old guys! 53-year-old Tim Karaker showed up at Fire Extreme in Bourbonnais, Ill. last week and was asked to fight. He said yes, and knocked out 21-year-old Brandon Frey. Watch his MMA debut here, and skip to the 2:30 mark for the KO. UFC fighter Stephan Bonnar narrates and lets a few NSFW words slip.
Apparently, the medical personnel who is supposed to be at that fight were out for a walk, because they weren’t too quick in responding to Frey on the ground. Nonetheless, congratulations to Karaker. You’re now the hero of Bonnar as well as every man over the age of 50 who wanted to throw some leather at a youngun but couldn’t actually get in a cage with him.

Louis Gaudinot became known for his green hair while a castmember on “The Ultimate Fighter,” but it got a bit out of hand on Saturday night at UFC on Fox 3. He won his bout over John Lineker by submission and the Fight of the Night bonus, but his long, thick, green hair became the focus of the bout. Dana White even joked that is was time for a cut.
Gaudinot told MMA Junkie Radio that he’s thinking of cutting his hair, but he’ll still keep it green.
“I was thinking about cutting it before the fight,” Gaudinot said. “I’m kind of used to the long hair now, but I think I might have to cut it just for the next fight so it doesn’t get in my face.”

Though MMA earned a victory when Vermont decided to legalize the sport last week, it suffered a defeat when a bill to legalize the sport was stopped before it could reach the floor. Assembly leader Sheldon Silver decided the bill didn’t have enough votes to pass.
After years of lobbying and hoping to have an event at Madison Square Garden in New York City, the UFC is disappointed that they will have to fight on another year. Zuffa vice president of government and regulatory affairs Marc Ratner was unhappy that the bill didn’t even come to a vote.
“I feel 150% if we had a vote on the floor of the Assembly, we would win,” Ratner said. “Not to get a vote is un-American.”
Earlier this year, UFC president Dana White “guaranteed” that MMA would be in New York this year. He said the UFC wanted to bring fights not just to NYC, but to Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse, too.
Losing the chance to get MMA in the third largest state is particularly hard to swallow considering the UFC just brought an event to the NYC-area over the weekend. Though the UFC on Fox 3 fights and weigh-ins were in East Rutherford, N.J., other pre-fight events were in Manhattan. They showed how an event can bring money to the area, but still were spurned by the legislature.
Will MMA make it to the Empire State? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

The 2012 eni FIM Superbike World Championship continues its first European leg of races this coming weekend at the Donington Park circuit in the UK, where it all began back in 1988, the year of the very first round of the production-based series. 25 years and 301 rounds further on, the East Midlands track 180 kms north of London is getting ready to offer even more excitement at what will be the fifth of 14 rounds this season and races number 598 and 599 in its history.
The complicated Monza weekend left the points standings virtually unchanged, Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing) still in control but with a two-point lead over Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati). With his triumph at the fastest circuit on the calendar Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) is now just six points away from the top slot and ready to make the most of home advantage. Donington is ideal ground for another great race by Sykes, who first emerged on the world scene in 2008 when he finished second on a Suzuki as a wild-card rider behind the three-times champion Troy Bayliss.
Biaggi has never won at Donington but he does have a 50% podium record, four times out of eight. His compatriot Marco Melandri, currently fourth in the table 25 points behind the leader, has gone better in the UK, taking his first win in Superbike last year and sharing the day with Carlos Checa.
In 2011 the Spaniard picked up the most points (45 out of 50 with a win and a second place) on a Ducati, a bike that in all of its different versions has won at Donington 17 times in 38 races. Another rider to keep an eye on will be Jonathan Rea, fifth in the points table but 27.5 points behind Biaggi: the spectacular northern Irishman has never been on the podium at Donington while Honda have not won a race here since 2008 when Ryuichi Kiyonari scored the double in a wet race.
The numerous UK fans expected to pack into Donington will also be cheering on their local hero Leon Haslam, the BMW Motorrad man who hails from just down the road near Derby. Frenchman Sylvain Guintoli (Effenbert-Liberty Racing Ducati), who scored his first win in the wet at Assen but then had to take a rain check from pole at Monza due to a problem in the warm-up lap, is also sure to be back on the ball this weekend.
It will also be a home round for the Crescent FIXI Suzuki team, which will line up with Leon Camier, podium finisher in 2011 with Aprilia and American John Hopkins who will probably not be in perfect form after picking up a broken bone in his foot at Monza. With the possibility of utilizing reference data accumulated in recent editions of the BSB championship, the Suzuki GSX-R might be in with a chance of gate-crashing the WSB regulars’ party.
Good news comes on the weather front, with a sunny weekend on the cards: after the rain that has ruined the last two rounds at Assen and Monza, the British crowd will be hoping for some true Superbike action at their home event.

In Superpole 3 Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) went over 0.3 seconds faster than the existing track best with a 1 minute 27.716 seconds lap that gave him his fourth Tissot-Superpole win of 2012. Close behind was his fellow Englishman Leon Haslam (BMW Motorrad Motorsport), the only other rider inside the 1’27 bracket. Haslam’s team-mate Marco Melandri was third and the front row for tomorrow’s races was completed by Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing), who came good after some challenging times in earlier practice sessions.
Sylvain Guintoli (Team Effenbert-Liberty Racing) earned a top five place on the grid, with Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team) sixth. Leon Camier (Fixi Crescent Suzuki) scored seventh and will be joined on the second row by Jakub Smrz (Liberty Racing Team Effenbert Ducati). 2011 World champion Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) will start Sunday’s race from the third row of the grid, in ninth place.

A truly historic 1-2 for the BMW Motorrad Motorsport Team saw Marco Melandri win a 23-lap opening race at Donington with his team-mate Leon Haslam only 0.728 seconds behind.
An eventual five rider fight for the podium places provided overtaking manoeuvres and personal duels aplenty as the race order changed multiple times. Tissot-Superpole winner Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) won a tense battle to go third, with Jonathan Rea (Honda World Superbike Team) making up places in the final laps to overhaul Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing) and take fourth place. The leading five were covered by 2.102 seconds at the end of the race.
World Champion Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) was sixth, four seconds from the win. He made it five different manufacturers in the top six at the flag.

Nate Diaz’s next opponent is set. After his dominating win over Jim Miller on Saturday night, MMA Junkie reports that Diaz will get the next shot at the UFC lightweight belt.
Though previous reports had Diaz possibly facing off with Anthony Pettis for a title eliminator, UFC president Dana White confirmed that Diaz will get the next title shot after champion Benson Henderson and former champ Frankie Edgar rematch this summer.
In his last three fights, Diaz has a second-round submission over Miller, a decision over Donald Cerrone and a first-round submission win over Takanori Gomi. Though Saturday’s UFC card on Fox was the best of the three cards that have aired on the network. Unfortunately, it was also the least-viewed of the three. Saturday’s fights pulled in 2.25 million viewers, less than the four million plus who watched UFC on Fox 1 and 2. The UFC won the key demographic of adults 18-49, but lost badly in overall ratings to CBS’ “48 Hours Mystery.”
There are several reasons for this drop-off in viewers:
– Lack of star power: The main card was not stocked with bankable stars, like in the past two events. There was no belt on the line, no outspoken promoter like Chael Sonnen, no well-known former champ like Rashad Evans. While Josh Koscheck has the reputation of being an MMA bad boy, it wasn’t anywhere near what Sonnen and Davis brought to the last card. The shame is that the performances were great and had nothing to do with the names written on a fight card.
– Mayweather/Cotto: Though the UFC did not go up directly against the marquee boxing match-up of the year, the Floyd Mayweather/Miguel Cotto bout did not help. Much of the week’s pre-fight coverage was devoted to the big boxing event instead of MMA bouts, and contributed to the lack of buzz around the UFC fights.
– No football: Something that hurt the UFC that they had no control over is that there was no football to promote the events. For the UFC’s first two events on Fox, the NFL was in-season and gave considerable promotion to fights. Cain Velasquez appeared on set with the NFL on Fox crew, and ads were run throughout games. Without football and its broad audience and huge ratings, the UFC didn’t have as much of a promotional push to pull in casual fans.

With good weather under British skies, World Superbike is making one of its few breaks from the European mainland, and racing at Donington Park this weekend. With a slew of local boys comprising the top spots of the WSBK grid, race fans at Donington had more than a few favorites for Sunday’s races, though pole-setter Tom Sykes seemed to be the favorite per usual, as the Brit looked for his first fair-weather win. Though Melandri …

Do you want to see what UFC on Fox 3′s Josh Koscheck looks like sitting on a tractor? Obviously, yes.
Sure, Koscheck has talked about his fancy home and fast cars while on “UFC Insider,” but he seems at home right here, too. We’ll see Saturday if his game is as diverse as his love of vehicles! OK, that was a reach. Sorry about that.

It’s time to check in with Cagereaders on their opinions on the latest in MMA news. We hear your thoughts on Quinton Jackson, which belts will change hands, and most importantly, Louis Gaudinot’s hair. Want your thoughts included in a future reader rants? Like Cagewriter on Facebook and comment on the stories that show up in your timeline.
How do you solve a problem like “Rampage?” Some Cagereaders have ideas.
There are a lot of people that make the UFC money, but once you start losing, your marketability dwindles. Add in the general consensus that Quinton doesn’t care anymore and seemingly doesn’t want to evolve his game; you’ll see that this is not a benefit for anyone involved. Have him fight the final time on his contract and let him go. Throw him in against a mid-tier fighter on the undercard (like they did with Arlovski years ago) and move on. — Ryan Wahl
Although I used to be a huge fan of Rampage and am less so these days, reading Quinton’s words makes me consider if what he wants is the same thing I think certain other fighters want: Big fights with no title implications. I think there are a handfull of fighter who just want to hammer checks and generally not worry about rank or title. In other words fighters may be hunting for financial security for what they do and not a title shot where some of their limitations could be exposed. I say the UFC should have Quinton fight guys with great stand up, let him makes some money, put on some great stand up fights and everyone wins. Sometimes you just give the baby his bottle until he grows out of it. — Mark Jimerson
With nearly every UFC belt on the line this summer, will any change hands?
I love this current batch of champions. I think it’s good for the sport to have dominant champs. That being said, I think the one most likely to lose in his next fight is Benson Henderson, but I think that JDS has less of a gap on the field in his weight class (Mir is a mismatch.) But Ben Henderson became somewhat of a superhuman to me after his last fight when he told his corner man he could go another five rounds, and seemed perfectly able to do so. In a way, that was one of the most impressive things I’ve seen watching years of MMA. — John Wilcox
Cagereaders tuned into Invicta FC’s all-female card.
Shows there are a lot of different weight classes that are competitive. Not just the Strikeforce 135! Great show, lots of heart by the women warriors! — David Feinblatt
And onto the most important point of discussion: Should Louis Gaudinot cut his hair?
God yes. Every second that a fighter has to spend getting hair out of his eyes is a second in which he is losing the fight. — Bruce Garrison

The Ultimate Fighter Live had a little added intrigue to the show tonight after news broke earlier this week about Coach Dominick Cruz’s knee injury but the focus was on the quarterfinals for tonight’s show. Both quarterfinals did not disappoint as Mike Chisea upset show favorite Justin Lawrence in a thrilling fight, while James Vick kept Joe Proctor off the mat to secure a pass to the semifinals.
